The National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM) is scientifically sound and highly credible, has good relationships with its partners and displays strong leadership. The institute also commits itself to promote innovation and public engagement. However, RIVM was advised to improve its relationship with contractors and its approach to the theme of Global Health. In addition, RIVM would stand to gain by moving even closer to society and reducing internal bureaucracy.
This was the conclusion of an audit team of international sister institutes during an organisation-oriented evaluation of RIVM conducted in April 2016. RIVM has already made a good start in taking actions towards improvement.
At the request of the RIVM board, the International Association of National Public Health Institutes (IANPHI) conducted an audit of the RIVM organisation. The aim of the evaluation was to assess the progress of the RIVM strategy - the Roadmap to RIVM2020 - as well as the organisational development of RIVM which was launched in 2012. This was a peer-to-peer evaluation.
The RIVM board considers this audit an important support for the strategic direction that was started in 2012 and will start working on the suggested improvements.
