The report 'BoBI on the road' gives an interim evaluation of the project: Development of an indicator system for biological soil quality (Dutch acronym BoBI). The project is divided in 9 phases, ranging from concept development, through monitoring towards diagnostic instruments and prognostic response models. The indicator system makes a cross-section through the soil ecosystem, analysing biodiversity and functional groups. Collection of sufficient field data is essential for succeeding. Until the spring of 2001 175 locations were sampled, mainly in agricultural areas. The aim is to collect data on 300 locations in The Netherlands. Besides a description of the proceedings in the project several examples are given of applications and methods to aggregate complex field data in simple indicator values (quality index). The report ends with a discussion and proposals for the integration of ecological soil quality in the national environmental policy.
