Abstract

Abstract

The nuclear power plant at Borssele (KCB) measures the release of radioactivity into the waste water and atmosphere. The RIVM performs eight times per year a counter expertise on these measurements. This form of counter-expertise is aimed at verifying and supporting the reliability of the analyses carried out by the KCB plant. The samples of waste water and ventilation air are taken by KCB at various time points dispersed throughout the year.

The two different sets of measurements are generally in agreement, as is also the case in 2016. In waste water, the agreement in the activity concentrations of gamma emitters was good with a few exceptions. Some differences concern radionuclides with a inhomogeneous distribution in waste water. For 3H in waste water the agreement was somewhat less than the 3H data in the report of 2015. Both KCB and RIVM did not find any strontium isotopes and gross-alpha activity in waste water.

In one sample of ventilation air both KCB and RIVM found a very low activity concentration of 131I. The data for 3H and 14C, which were collected by a zeolite cartridge, show reasonable agreement in the first and third quarter.

RIVM carried out this counter-expertise on behalf of the Authority for Nuclear Safety and Radiation Protection (ANVS).
