In November 2014 avian ‘flu has been detected on poultry farms in the Netherlands. It is the highly pathogenic variant of avian influenza A (H5N8), which is very dangerous for poultry (chickens, ducks and turkeys).

This strain is lethal to chickens. Humans can only become infected with the avian influenza A (H5N8) through direct and close contact with sick animals. This has not yet been observed.

In accordance with European regulations, poultry is culled when avian influenza A (H5N8) is confirmed.
