This page provides information on possible methods for the reprocessing of disposable medical equipment for health care facilities and professionals. Such equipment is intended for single use only. New information will be added to this page as it becomes available.
In collaboration with external experts, RIVMNational Institute for Public Health and the Environment
is currently identifying methods to enable the reprocessing of medical disposables.
A reprocessing method is deemed promising if it:
- shows adequate cleaning and/or disinfection characteristics
- does not affect the material or shape of the device too severely
- can be scaled up, from a technical and logistical point of view
Reprocessing of single-use medical equipment is not allowed under normal circumstances. It should only be performed as a last resort in the event of shortages. Organisations that reprocess medical equipment for subsequent reuse are considered ‘manufacturers’ by law, which means that they are fully responsible for the reprocessed products concerned. The methods described on this page provide a guideline and do not detract from this responsibility.
