English Abstract
Based on the results of a test fumigation of a factory with the gas sulfuryl fluoride for controlling termites, the National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM) concluded that, in this case, the 10-m safety zone was not adequate. Measurements taken during the test fumigation at the furthest extent of the 10-m safety zone and outside of it revealed gas levels higher than those assessed to be safe. There were a number of exceedances during a period of a few minutes, with 4.8 ppm sulfuryl fluoride being the highest concentration measured.
This test was the first of its kind with the gas sulfuryl fluoride in the Netherlands. One of the required safety measures for such fumigations is that the limit value of 3 ppm sulfuryl fluoride is not to be exceeded at a distance of 10 m around the building. The RIVM was commissioned by the VROM-Inspectorate to determine if, during such fumigations, the 10-m safety zone would provide sufficient protection.
The RIVM recommends that other (test) fumigations with the gas sulfuryl fluoride be carried out and studied, such as those in buildings with lower ventilation points and those performed during different weather conditions (for example, a strong wind). The RIVM also advises that fumigations of buildings with this gas be subject to government supervision.

Bij een proefgassing van een bedrijfsgebouw met sulfurylfluoride ter bestrijding van ongedierte constateerde het RIVM dat een afstand van 10 meter niet voldoende was. Metingen toonden aan dat de grenswaarde van 3 ppm sulfurylfluoride op 10 meter afstand van het gebouw en daarbuiten meerdere malen overschreden werden. Deze overschrijdingen duurden enkele minuten en de maximaal gemeten concentratie was 4,8 ppm.
Het was voor het eerst dat een gebouwgassing met sulfurylfluoride om insecten te bestrijden in Nederland plaatsvond. De veiligheidseisen hiervoor zijn in een gebruiksvoorschrift beschreven. Een van deze eisen is dat de grenswaarde van 3 ppm sulfurylfluoride op en buiten een zone van 10 meter rond het gebouw niet overschreden mag worden. De VROM-Inspectie wilde weten of de voorgeschreven zone van 10 meter toereikend is voor gebouwgassingen met sulfurylfluoride.
Het RIVM stelt voor om nader onderzoek te doen. Het gaat daarbij om (proef)gassingen met sulfurylfluoride waarbij de ontgassing op lagere hoogte moet plaatsvinden, en bij gassingen onder andere weersomstandigheden, zoals harde wind. Verder vindt het RIVM het nuttig dat de overheid toezicht houdt bij gebouwgassingen met sulfurylfluoride.
