Abstract

The quality of the upper meter of groundwater was investigated at half of the sites included in the Trend Monitoring Network Acidification (TMV) from autumn 2006 to the beginning of 2007. The TMV is documenting the effects of acidification on groundwater at 150 sampling sites located on sandy soil in nature areas in the Netherlands.
Groundwater samples could be obtained at 70 of the 75 locations; at the remaining five sites, the groundwater layer was either too deep for sampling or the location was no longer suitable for sampling. The standard nitrate value of 50 mg per litre was exceeded at 16 % of the locations investigated. The concentrations of cadmium, chromium and zinc exceeded the desired target levels at 51 %, 47 % and 70 % of the sampled sites, respectively. The intervention values for cadmium and/or zinc were also surpassed at a few sites.
The TMV has monitored the quality of the upper meter of groundwater in the Netherlands since its establishment in 1989. This network also collects data on soil texture and environmental parameters, such as vegetation, tree height and layer of the litter. The quality of the groundwater at the other 75 locations covered by the monitoring network was monitored in 2007/2008 but these data are not yet available for documentation. A trend analysis of the measurement data will be provided later.
