Abstract

In the period December 2007 till March 2008, the quality of the upper one meter of the groundwater has been investigated at 75 locations of the TMV monitoring network. These data serve to assess the effects of acidification of the groundwater under nature areas (forest/heathland) on sandy soils. The European standard for nitrate of 50 mg per litre was exceeded at 5% of the locations investigated. The concentrations of cadmium, chromium, nickel and zinc exceeded the target levels at 63%, 45%, 23% and 87% of the sampled sites, respectively. At a few sites, the intervention level for cadmium, nickel and zinc was exceeded.
The TMV was established in 1989. The network monitors periodically, in cycli of two years, 150 locations in the Netherlands. This implies that during one year of measurement the groundwater quality is assessed at 75 locations. The results of the 'first' 75 locations of the 2006/2008 cycle were published in 2009. The current report covers the second half of the 150 sites. An analysis of the measuring results will be done at a later stage.
During the 2006/2008 measuring cycle also observation were made of soil texture and other environmental parameters such as type of vegetation, tree height and thickness of the litter. This type of information illustrates the variation in natural conditions at the locations investigated (deciduous forest, coniferous forest, heathland). These environmental parameters will be used to explain differences in groundwater quality at monitoring sites.
