Abstract

The questions in the standardized questionnaire on food consumption used for the Public Health Monitor in the Netherlands were shown to be valid for the consumption of fruit and fruit juice, while questions on the consumption of vegetables were less accurate. The project "Local and National Public Health Monitor" was set up to harmonize the collection of local data collections, which takes place through the regional Community Health Services. To determine whether data collected by the standardized questionnaire on food consumption reflects the actual consumption, analyses were performed on data of Community Health Services and the National Food Consumption Survey 2003 (VCP-2003). The results on the consumption of fruit, fruit juice, and cooked vegetables recorded by the Community Health Services and the VCP-2003 were found to be comparable, but those on raw vegetables were not. This meant that the questions on raw vegetables could not be validated on the basis of the VCP-2003. For fruit, fruit juice, and cooked vegetables the results of the VCP-2003 questionnaire were compared with those of two 24-hour recalls. The estimates of fruit and fruit juice consumption based on the questionnaire showed fairly strong comparability with the estimates based on 24-hour recalls. However, the comparability between cooked vegetables was weak, which was consistent with the literature. In general, people reported higher consumptions of these food groups in the questionnaire than in the recalls.
