Vanaf 2024 is de rotavirusvaccinatie onderdeel van het Rijksvaccinatieprogramma. Dat heeft de staatssecretaris van VWS Ministerie van Volksgezondheid, Welzijn en Sport (Ministerie van Volksgezondheid, Welzijn en Sport)(Ministerie van Volksgezondheid, Welzijn en Sport) in 2022 besloten op advies van de Gezondheidsraad (2021). 

Rotavirusvaccinatie is geen prik, maar een vaccin dat via druppels in de mond wordt gegeven. Kinderen krijgen de druppels op de leeftijd van 6 tot 9 weken en nog een keer op de leeftijd van 3 maanden. Het rotavirusvaccin kan ook worden gegeven aan te vroeg geboren baby’s. 

Het rotavirusvaccin is een bestaand vaccin dat sinds 2006 in steeds meer landen in vaccinatieprogramma’s is opgenomen.

Onderzoek naar effectiviteit rotavirusvaccins

Er zijn verschillende onderzoeken gedaan naar de effectiviteit van rotavirusvaccins [4,5,6]. In deze onderzoeken werd een groep baby’s die wel was gevaccineerd vergeleken met een groep baby’s die niet was gevaccineerd. Uit alle onderzoeken bleek dat van de groep die wel was gevaccineerd er 80-98% minder baby’s met rotavirus in het ziekenhuis terechtkwamen dan van de groep baby’s die niet was gevaccineerd.

Welke bijwerkingen kunnen optreden na rotavirusvaccinatie?

Zoals bij alle vaccinaties kunnen er na een rotavirusvaccinatie milde bijwerkingen worden verwacht. Zeer zeldzame reacties, zoals een ernstige allergische reactie, zijn niet uit te sluiten.

Er is ook een zeer zeldzame bijwerking bekend. In de eerste week na vaccinatie is er mogelijk een kleine kans dat een deel van de darmen blokkeren of verdraaien, dit noemen we ‘darminvaginatie’. Dit is goed te behandelen met medische zorg. Bij de huidige vaccins wordt mogelijk een iets hoger risico op invaginatie gezien in de eerste week na vaccinatie [9-14]. Er zijn ook onderzoeken die laten zien dat de kans op invaginatie niet groter is, of zelfs lager is, na de vaccinatie [9, 15]. Om de kans hierop zo klein mogelijk te houden, is het belangrijk dat baby’s de eerste dosis van het vaccin krijgen wanneer zij jonger zijn dan 3 maanden.

Preventie tegen besmetting met rotavirus

Rotavirus is heel besmettelijk. Goede hygiëne helpt om verspreiding van de ziekte te voorkomen.
