The project SMALL aims at supporting the development of applicable and sustainable water and sanitation provision models for small towns of Sub-Saharan Africa. As part of this project Harold van den Berg (RIVM) provided training on Water Quality Monitoring for a small water supply (Collins Ltd) in Moamba, Mozambique. The training was held from 5 – 8 June 2017 at the Eduardo Mondlane University in Maputo, Mozambique.

The aim of the training was that the participants from Eduardo Mondlane University and Collins Ltd are capable of independently carry out the following activities linked to water quality monitoring:

  • Prepare for and perform sampling at different points  (intake, treatment steps, consumers households)
  • Perform analyses of basic physico-chemical parameters (Free residual chlorine, Temperature, pH, turbidity)
  • Perform microbiological analysis of E.coli and total coliforms

The training was very successful and participants are now able to carry out the activities as mentioned above. Both university and the water utility start testing drinking water samples in the coming months. Later this year a follow up training will be given.
