After vaccination against mumps was introduced in 1987, the disease became rare in the Netherlands.  The mumps virus does still cause outbreaks occasionally, especially in areas with low vaccination coverage.  This page presents the latest figures on the mumps virus in the Netherlands. RIVM updates these figures once a month.

Doctors and laboratory managers notify the Municipal Public Health Services (GGDs) if a patient has mumps. The charts below show the number of people with mumps reported in the Netherlands.

There are two outbreaks in these reported cases. From June to September 2023, there was an outbreak of mumps at a primary school in the west of the Netherlands. Since November 2023, there has been an outbreak of mumps in areas with low vaccination coverage in the middle of the Netherlands.

Reported cases of mumps in the Netherlands, per year

The chart below shows the annual number of people with mumps reported in the Netherlands since 1976. Mumps was not a notifiable disease between 1999 and 2008, so no records were kept on reported cases in that period. During the COVID-19 pandemic (2020-2022), there was a sharp decrease in the number of reported mumps cases. This may have been due to the measures to prevent COVID-19 from spreading.
