European Network for medical and veterinary entomology

VectorNet is a European network focused on medical and veterinary entomology. It is a joint initiative by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) and the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC), supporting risk assessments related to vector-borne diseases, in a One Health approach. In mid-2024, the third iteration of the VectorNet project (VN3) was launched, following a four-year cycle.

Data collection

VectorNet enables data collection, mapping, and information sharing on four primary vector groups: ticks, mosquitoes, sand flies, and biting midges. These vectors can carry pathogens that pose risks to human and animal health across Europe. Vector Net aims to contribute to improving European preparedness and response for vector-borne diseases, following a One Health approach.

One Health collaboration

VectorNet3 will continue the activities of VectorNet 2 (VN2). In addition to data collection and sharing, the project will provide scientific advice, capacity building and training and build a new One Health Vector Net Entomology Network (OH-VEN).

RIVM role

RIVM is participating in various research projects and activities aimed at knowledge integration and strengthening One Health collaboration within the Netherlands and internationally. We played a leading role in VectorNet’s second iteration in the Netherlands from 2019 to 2023.  RIVM colleague Marieta Braks, medical entomologist and researcher at RIVM, coordinated VN2. VectorNet evolved into a well-organised and widely recognised One Health network during this period. In VN3, RIVM has  a role as deputy coordinator with Avia-GIS, Belgium leading project management.
