Dermatophilosis in the Netherlands

Between March and June, 3 people in the Netherlands were diagnosed with skin infections caused bythe bacterium Dermatophilus congolensis. There are also a few other people with symptoms that may be related to this infection.

The chance of getting dermatophilosis is small. People who work a lot with animals, such as farmers, veterinarians and petting zoo staff, have a higher risk of getting dermatophilosis. Men who have sex with men, are also at higher risk. This is because the bacteria can be transmitted through sexual contact.

Dermatophilosis is usually a mild disease. The skin often heals on its own within a few weeks.
