RIVM has determined the new thematic focus for its Strategic Programme (SPR) 2027–2030. Through this programme, we will be investing in our own research, innovation, and knowledge development on topics that will be crucial for public health and the living environment in the coming years.
What is the SPR?
The (Strategic Programme RIVM) is RIVM’s internal research programme. Every four years the programme receives a new focus, set out in so‑called contours. These contours determine how RIVM will further develop its expertise to enable it to continue offering effective advice to both government and society on health and environmental issues.
For the 2027–2030 period, the contours were drafted by a steering group composed of the Chief Science Officers and representatives from the RIVM Centres for Infectious Disease Control (CIb), Monitoring and Verification (M&V) and Public Health and Healthcare (V&Z), chaired by Charles Wijnker, M&V Director. Input from RIVM staff and external partners was incorporated.
Five thematic priorities
A substantial part of the SPR budget will be allocated to five broad themes:
- societal resilience;
- planetary health within planetary boundaries;
- future prevention and health care;
- cumulative exposure and health;
- healthy life course.
In addition to these five priorities, the programme retains flexibility to respond to new developments. As in previous years, funding remains available for medium‑sized projects and seed‑funding projects, allowing researchers to develop new ideas.
