Adenovirus infections are caused by different types of adenoviruses. There are 60 types. The virus can be transmitted from person to person. Young children in particular can develop symptoms after infection.

How do I recognise an adenovirus infection?

The course of the disease depends, among other things, on the type of virus, and the age and resistance of the infected person.

About half of all infections do not cause any symptoms. If a person does develop symptoms, they are usually not severe. The most common symptoms are respiratory symptoms (such as the common cold), bowel symptoms (such as diarrhoea or stomach cramps) and eye inflammation (conjunctivitis). These can all occur simultaneously.

In case of infants and young children, the symptoms are usually the common cold, sore throat, eye inflammation, fever and/or diarrhoea. In adults, adenovirus infections can cause eye or respiratory tract infections. People with an impaired immune system are more likely to develop severe symptoms. These may include pneumonia, liver inflammation, bladder inflammation, kidney failure and, very uncommonly, meningitis or encephalitis.

How do I get an adenovirus infection?

The virus spreads via saliva, for example from coughing or sneezing. Infection can also occur via faeces, food or water, especially in poor hygiene conditions. There are more than 60 types of adenoviruses that can cause infections.

How do I prevent an adenovirus infection?

Regular handwashing, especially before preparing food and eating or after using the toilet, helps prevent infection.

Can an adenovirus infection be treated?

Usually, the symptoms disappear after a few days. The time varies depending on the symptoms. In case of respiratory symptoms, it takes 2 to 5 days. Bowel problems can take 8 to 12 days and eye inflammation 7 to 15 days. In severe cases, patients are sometimes given medicines.

How often do adenovirus infections occur?

The virus could be in the body without you noticing anything wrong. If symptoms develop, the infection may have occurred 1 to 14 days before.
