In France, the first dengue (breakbone fever) cases of this year have recently been reported that were acquired within the country. These infections were contracted in the south of France, in the departments of Tarn and Hérault.

Dengue is transmitted by certain mosquito species which, especially in the Mediterranean countries of Europe, have increasingly been able to survive the winter in recent years. People from Europe usually fall ill during or after a trip to a country where dengue is common.

In so called European "autochthonous transmission", the disease is spread by a European mosquito that has become infected with the dengue virus after biting a sick person with dengue who has been to a country with a high dengue incidence. France has been reporting autochthonous dengue cases for several years, with infections more often observed in the same southern regions.
