Outbreak of Marburg Virus in Ethiopia

The Ethiopian government has confirmed an outbreak of the Marburg virus. This is the first outbreak of this disease in Ethiopia. The Marburg virus is a viral hemorrhagic fever similar to Ebola.

So far, the virus has been confirmed in 9 people located at the city of Jinka in southern Ethiopia. The national authorities are intensifying their response to the outbreak. They have started contact tracing, additional screenings, and public information campaigns to prevent the spread of the Marburg virus.

Are you in Ethiopia? Make sure not to touch sick people or people who have died from the Marburg virus. Avoid funeral rituals that involve contact with the deceased patient. Wash your hands frequently with water and soap.
