The entire realisation process, from pilot studies to the full implementation and integration of the colorectal cancer screening programme across the Netherlands, took about 13 years. The most important topics in each phase are discussed and the most important steps in each phase are pointed out.

The population screening for colorectal cancer falls under the direction of the National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM).
