Between 25 August and 15 October, people aged 70 and over will receive an invitation letter from RIVM. Those aged 70 and over who received a COVID-19 vaccination from the GGD last year and gave permission for their details to be shared will also receive a proposed appointment in this letter. Other people aged 70 and over can book an appointment themselves.

People under 70 who belong to a risk group because of an illness or medical condition can also receive a COVID-19 vaccination. They will not receive an invitation letter, but can book an appointment themselves. People under 70 can use the COVID-19 vaccination check to find out whether the vaccination is recommended for them.

Who is eligible for a COVID-19 vaccination?

The vaccine is recommended for people at greater risk of becoming seriously ill with COVID-19, because it offers additional protection. COVID-19 vaccination reduces the risk of serious illness, hospital admission and death due to COVID-19. 

This autumn, the COVID-19 vaccination is available to:

• people aged 70 years and older; 
• people aged 50 to 69 with one or more illnesses or medical conditions that put them at greater risk of becoming seriously ill with COVID-19; 
• Adults and children in medical high-risk groups (such as people with severely impaired immunity). 
• care workers who have direct contact with vulnerable patients. 

Some people who do not belong to the groups listed above can also receive a COVID-19 vaccination. This includes people with a vulnerable family member, for example, or people who would like to be vaccinated on the advice of their treating doctor. 

Healthy and under 70? No COVID-19 vaccination needed

Hospital admissions due to COVID-19 among healthy people under 70 have become rare. For this reason, the age threshold for people without underlying medical conditions has been raised this year from 60 and over to 70 and over. 

Residents of care homes

People living in residential care institutions will receive the COVID-19 vaccination in the care facility itself. They will receive more information about this from the care institution. 

Receiving the COVID-19 vaccination at home

In exceptional cases, when a serious illness, disorder or disability prevents people from going to a GGD vaccination centre on their own or with assistance, it is possible to receive the COVID-19 vaccination at home. From 25 August, they can contact the GGD by telephone on 0800 7070 to arrange this. 

Recommendations to prevent respiratory infections

Some people can become very ill from infections caused by a coronavirus, influenza virus (flu) or cold virus. It is therefore still important for everyone to follow the recommendations to prevent respiratory infections.
