The new COVID-19 vaccination round will start on 16 September 2024. For people who are at higher risk, the COVID-19 vaccination offers more effective protection against hospital admission or death due to COVID-19. This is important because the coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 is still present and could surge again.
The COVID-19 vaccination is available to people aged 60 years and older and to people aged 18 to 59 who are invited to get the seasonal flu vaccine each year. Children and adults in medical high-risk groups (such as people with impaired immunity) and care workers can also get the COVID-19 vaccination this autumn.
Vaccination may also be available in individual cases as needed, for example for people who have a vulnerable family member.
Invitations
From 27 August 2024 on, the first people will receive an invitation for COVID-19 vaccination. RIVM will send an invitation letter to people aged 60 years and older. People under 60 who are in one of the target groups listed above will not receive an invitation letter. They can contact the Municipal Public Health Services (GGDs) to make an appointment.
Vaccination sites
The COVID-19 vaccination will be given by the Municipal Public Health Service (GGD) in each region. The vaccine used in autumn 2024 will be the mRNA vaccine made by Pfizer/BioNTech (Comirnaty) updated for the Omicron variant JN.1.
People living in residential care institutions will receive the COVID-19 vaccination through their care facility. From 27 August on, people who are unable to travel to a GGD vaccination site on their own or with assistance, for health reasons, can contact their local GGD to see if they can be vaccinated at home.
The COVID-19 vaccination will be available until 6 December 2024.
