In 2024, 18 per cent of adults smoked, 6 per cent drank alcohol to excess and half of all adults were overweight. Compared to 10 years ago, the percentage of smokers and excessive drinkers has decreased. The percentage of overweight people has stayed the same. These are some of the results that Statistics Netherlands (CBS) published on a range of lifestyle topics today.

The data is from the Health Survey/Lifestyle Monitor 2024, a collaboration between CBS, RIVM and the Lifestyle Monitor consortium. Read the entire news item on the CBS website.

Lifestyle Monitor

RIVM uses the Lifestyle Monitor to monitor health and lifestyle trends. The resulting data is intended to support government policy. The Lifestyle Monitor is a collaboration of parties in the lifestyle domain: the Trimbos Institute, Rutgers, STI Aids The Netherlands, Dutch Consumer Safety Institute, the Netherlands Nutrition Centre, Dutch Centre of Expertise on Health Disparities (Pharos), Association of  GGDs (Community Health Services) and GHOR (Regional Medical Emergency Preparedness and Planning) and CBS. Later this year, RIVM will publish a number of in-depth reports on such topics as physical activity for various groups, including young people and people who engage in little physical activity.
