The government offers women between 50 and 75 years the opportunity to participate in the National Programme for Breast Cancer Screening free of charge. Sometimes additional examination is needed, for example if the X-rays are difficult to assess or if an abnormality is found. The government offers you the opportunity to participate in the breast cancer screening free of charge. That is why the mammogram is free.
Follow-up costs
If further assessment is needed, for example, because the assessment of the breast X-rays was not possible, or because an abnormality was seen,
this further assessment is not part of the population screening. The costs of this additional examination are covered by your health insurance. You may have to pay some or all of the costs yourself. This depends on your excess and how much of it you have already used. If you have any questions, please contact your healthcare insurer.
Breast X-rays outside the population screening
Are you having breast X-rays taken at the hospital outside of the population screening? For example, after a referral by your GP because you have certain symptoms, or because you may have an increased risk of breast cancer due to hereditary predisposition? In that case, the examination falls outside the scope of the population screening. This means it is not free.
