The researchers are developing a computational model to calculate exposure during sideways spraying. A computational model was developed in OBO-1 to calculate exposure in the living environment around flowering bulb fields. This model was verified for downward spraying in flower bulb cultivation. No model is currently available to calculate exposure during sideways spraying. Sideways spraying is used on shrubs, trees and fruit crops throughout the Netherlands. A computational model capable of calculating exposure to spray drift during both downward and sideways spraying will make it possible to map exposure throughout the Netherlands.

Aims of this sub-study:

  • Develop and verify a computational model capable of assessing local residents’ and growers’ exposure to pesticides during sideways spraying.
  • Assess exposure to pesticides of people living near agricultural land on which sideways spraying is used.

For this sub-study, the researchers requested the cooperation of fruit growers and local residents. Measurements were taken and samples collected at selected fruit-growers in Zuid-Gelderland. The measurements, carried out in collaboration with both local residents and growers, were taken between spring 2025 and spring 2026.
