You will receive a letter with the results within ten working days. If abnormalities were detected in the X-ray pictures, your GP may get in touch with you.
What are the possible results?
- No abnormality
No suspicious abnormalities were seen on the X-ray. This is the case for about 975 out of every 1,000 women who are screened.
- An abnormality
An abnormality was detected on the X-rays. This is the case for about 25 out of every 1,000 women who are screened. You will then be referred to a hospital. You can discuss with your GP which hospital you should attend for further examination. After further tests, about 7 of these 25 women are found to have breast cancer.
