Abstract

Health and healthcare in the Netherlands have been compared with those in eleven neighbouring European countries with similar economies and cultures. The health of the Dutch is broadly in line with that of our neighbours, although there are differences in emphasis. The life expectancy of Dutch men is higher, while the life expectancy of Dutch women is lower than in most other countries. Furthermore, In the Netherlands, relatively more people die from cancer and relatively less from certain circulatory diseases. In addition, the healthcare costs of the Netherlands are high, as in most other countries, but the share of long-term care (including a large proportion of elderly care) is greater than in other countries. However, the share of the elderly in the general population is still relatively small as compared to the other countries.

The study also looked at the quality and accessibility of medical care, long-term care and prevention (measures to promote health and prevent disease). In the Netherlands, the quality and accessibility of medical care is generally better or at a similar level as compared to the other countries. Little is known about the quality and accessibility of long-term care. Because the ageing of the population in the Netherlands will catch up with that of other countries in the coming years, it will be a challenge to provide good, accessible and affordable care for everyone in the future. As far as prevention is concerned, the Netherlands has a responsibility to reduce the relatively high number of smokers and to counteract the decline in immunisation coverage.

This study is a collaboration between RIVM and the Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport. The data have been taken from a number of international organisations and the State of Public Health and Health Services (StaatVenZ). The StaatVenZ presents reliable, unambiguous and up-to-date data on public health and healthcare in the Netherlands. Good information is important for the government to have an overview of the current situation and developments in public health, healthcare and costs and set priorities for policy and research.
