Samenvatting
Het fosforverwerkende bedrijf Thermphos heeft invloed op de luchtkwaliteit in het Sloegebied door de uitstoot van fijn stof, strontium-, cadmium-, fosfor-, stikstof- en zwavel-verbindingen. Het is aannemelijk dat sommige van deze stoffen onder ongunstige omstandigheden aanleiding kunnen geven tot stank en overlast tot op een afstand van enkele kilometers. Gezondheidskundige normen worden echter niet overschreden. Thermphos is een minder belangrijke bron van organische stoffen, zoals benzeen, tolueen, xyleen en ethylbenzeen. Dit zijn de belangrijkste bevindingen van een RIVM-onderzoek dat op verzoek van de provincie Zeeland plaatsvond van juni tot en met oktober 2011. De aanleiding voor dit onderzoek waren terugkerende klachten van omwonenden en werknemers, zich uitend in stank en prikkeling van de slijmvliezen. Het rapport is onderdeel van een uitgebreide studie naar mogelijke gezondheidseffecten van Thermphos, met belangrijke bijdragen van de GGD Zeeland.
Abstract
The phosphorus processing company Thermphos affects the air quality in the Sloegebied through the emission of particulate matter, strontium, cadmium, phosphorus, nitrogen and sulphur compounds. It is plausible that under adverse conditions some of these substances may give rise to odour nuisance, up to a distance of a few kilometres. However, health reference values would not be exceeded. In comparison to the aforementioned compounds, Thermphos is a less important source of organic substances, such as benzene, toluene, xylene and ethyl benzene.
These are the main findings of an RIVM study that took place from June to October 2011, at the request of the province of Zeeland. The reason for this study was recurrent complaints from local residents and workers, expressed as odour nuisance and irritation of the mucous membranes.
This report is part of a comprehensive study into the possible health effects of Thermphos. The Public Health Service Zeeland has contributed significantly to this study.
