The LCI is responsible for

• Translating scientific and practical knowledge, including social science research, into advice for the prevention and control of infectious diseases.
• Connecting national and regional chain partners for the prevention and control of infectious diseases.
• Substantive advice from government and professionals on how best to control infectious diseases, including in the event of an outbreak.
• Setting up and sharing guidelines for infectious disease control and hygiene/infection prevention.
• The medical content management of the Dutch National Immunisation Programme and other vaccination programmes, such as those for influenza/pneumococcal flu, COVID-19, Mpox and hepatitis B for risk groups.

In the event of a supra-regional infectious disease outbreak or a report of a specific infectious disease, the LCI assumes national coordination of the response and supports the Municipal Public Health Services (GGDs) and other chain partners in this process.
