To reduce antimicrobial resistance, the Netherlands has adopted the One Health approach: a joint approach to resistance in humans, animals and the environment. To that end, RIVM collaborates with many different regional, national and international authorities, care facilities and organisations.

National approach to antimicrobial resistance

Limiting the development and spread of antimicrobial resistance: that is the main goal of the national strategy to combat antimicrobial resistance (AMR). The intended outcome is that infections can continue to be treated effectively with antibiotics and other medicines in the future.

Regional approach to antimicrobial resistance

Since 2017, there have been 9 regional AMR care networks. Their task is to promote cooperation between care providers in their region. They provide an overview of risks and measures for all regional care facilities and healthcare professionals, share knowledge and expertise, and identify options for preventing infections and promoting responsible use.

International collaboration on antimicrobial resistance

Resistant bacteria do not stop at national borders. This is why it is important to collaborate with other countries and international organisations to fight antimicrobial resistance.
