This page contains information materials about the national colorectal cancer screening programme. If you are between 55 and 75 years old, you will receive an invitation for colorectal cancer screening every two years.
Each year, around 13,000 people in the Netherlands develop colorectal cancer and around 5,000 people die from this disease. Colorectal cancer is one of the most common forms of cancer in the Netherlands. The screening programme enables early detection, which can prevent that people develop colorectal cancer or can enable better treatment. If colorectal cancer is detected early, people have a greater chance of being cured and less far-reaching treatment is required.
Self-test for colorectal cancer screening
00:00:00:05 - 00:00:05:07
Population screening for colorectal cancer:
how to take part.
00:00:05:12 - 00:00:10:00
For the screening test you collect a sample
of your stool in a test tube.
00:00:10:02 - 00:00:14:16
Your invitation letter included
the test tube and a collection paper...
00:00:14:19 - 00:00:17:10
a bag and a return envelope.
00:00:18:01 - 00:00:22:24
Use the self-test on Sunday, Monday,
Tuesday, or Wednesday.
00:00:23:04 - 00:00:25:09
Send it in on the same day.
00:00:25:17 - 00:00:29:18
This video shows you what to do.
There are four steps.
00:00:29:20 - 00:00:34:00
All the information is also
in the instructions on paper.
00:00:35:10 - 00:00:41:07
Step one, use the collection paper in your
test kit to easily collect your stool.
00:00:43:04 - 00:00:47:08
Fold open the collection paper so you
can put your hands through it.
00:00:48:03 - 00:00:53:15
Slide the collection paper onto the toilet seat
with the drawing in the middle.
00:00:54:00 - 00:00:57:04
Make sure the collection paper is under
your buttocks...
00:00:57:06 - 00:00:59:05
when you sit on the toilet seat.
00:00:59:15 - 00:01:02:22
The collection paper should be hanging
lower than the seat...
00:01:02:23 - 00:01:06:00
so it is loose enough to catch a sample.
00:01:06:01 - 00:01:08:19
Catch your stool in the collection paper.
00:01:08:20 - 00:01:13:07
If you prefer to catch your stool
in some other way, that is fine too.
00:01:13:17 - 00:01:17:12
Step two, the test tube has two caps.
00:01:18:03 - 00:01:20:13
Only twist open the green cap.
00:01:20:14 - 00:01:23:14
If you accidentally twist off
the clear cap too...
00:01:23:18 - 00:01:26:10
then the liquid in the tube will come out.
00:01:26:11 - 00:01:29:16
If that happens, the test tube
can not be used.
00:01:29:20 - 00:01:32:20
You will have to request a new test tube.
00:01:33:11 - 00:01:38:08
Step three, the green cap has a swab
with a textured tip.
00:01:39:23 - 00:01:44:08
Stick the textured tip about one
centimeter into your stool.
00:01:44:10 - 00:01:47:16
Do this at four different places
in your stool...
00:01:47:23 - 00:01:51:19
without putting the swab back
into the tube in between.
00:01:51:21 - 00:01:56:12
There only needs to be a small amount
of stool on the textured tip.
00:01:56:20 - 00:01:58:15
Put the swab back into the tube...
00:01:58:18 - 00:02:02:13
then screw on the green cap tightly
right away.
00:02:02:18 - 00:02:05:17
The liquid in the test tube
may look cloudy.
00:02:05:18 - 00:02:07:05
That is normal.
00:02:07:07 - 00:02:11:15
Now tear off the collection paper along
the dotted lines at the left and right...
00:02:11:17 - 00:02:13:07
and flush it all down.
00:02:14:04 - 00:02:17:07
The collection paper is biodegradable.
00:02:18:08 - 00:02:21:09
Step four, put the test tube in the bag...
00:02:21:12 - 00:02:24:19
and then place it in the gray
return envelope.
00:02:24:24 - 00:02:27:09
Send the envelope back on the same day...
00:02:27:10 - 00:02:30:03
so it gets to the laboratory quickly.
00:02:31:00 - 00:02:34:22
Remember that post is not collected
on holidays.
00:02:35:17 - 00:02:37:10
About two weeks later...
00:02:37:11 - 00:02:42:11
you will get a letter with a test result
of the colorectal cancer screening.
