Abstract

Emissions of some components in the stack gas of the municipal solid waste incinerator (MSWI) ARN in Weurt are higher than the maximum allowed emissions according to a standard, which will be effective from 30 november 1993. Emissions show an average dioxin concentration in the stack gas of ca. 6 ng TEQ/Nm3 (dry, 11% oxygen). This concentration is considered to be low for this type of installation, when compared with other types of MSWIs in the Netherlands. The yearly emission of dioxins from this installation is estimated at ca. 3 g TEQ. The contribution of the ARN to the maximum deposition is estimated at 15 ng TEQ/(m2. year) at 700 m North-East of the installation. Background depositions are estimated at 5 ng TEQ/(m2.year). From the measured emission a dioxin concentration of ca. 2 pg TEQ/g milk fat is predicted in the deposition maximum with a model system. So there is only a faint chance of exceeding the standard for milk of 6 pg TEQ/g milk fat. Determination of dioxin levels in milk, grass and soil in this area is therefore not recommended.
