Samenvatting
Veel mensen klussen in huis en gebruiken daarvoor producten als een ladder of een cirkelzaag. Daar kan soms iets bij misgaan en een ongeluk veroorzaken. Uit ziekenhuisgegevens is informatie bekend over de slachtoffers, zoals leeftijd en geslacht. De slachtoffers zijn bijvoorbeeld vaak mannen op hogere leeftijd. Ook is bekend wat de gevolgen zijn van de ongelukken, zoals het soort letsel. Maar hoe de ongelukken thuis ontstaan is nog niet zo duidelijk.
Het RIVM en de NVWA willen dat beter begrijpen. Dan kunnen betere adviezen worden gegeven om ongelukken thuis te voorkomen. Een belangrijke vraag is of het ongeluk aan het product ligt of aan het gedrag van de gebruiker. Het product kan bijvoorbeeld verouderd zijn. Of de gebruiker kan risico’s onderschatten of haast hebben.
Er is al meer bekend over oorzaken van ongelukken op het werk. Het RIVM heeft daarom oorzaken van ernstige ongelukken op het werk vergeleken met wat er bekend is over ongelukken thuis. Er blijken zowel verschillen als overeenkomsten te zijn tussen de ongelukken thuis en op het werk.
Een overeenkomst is bijvoorbeeld dat klussers thuis en op het werk hetzelfde soort letsel oplopen. Ook lijkt dat wat er vlak voor het ongeluk gebeurt, vaak op elkaar. Zo reiken slachtoffers van ongelukken met een ladder te ver van de ladder, waardoor zij hun balans verliezen. Een verschil is bijvoorbeeld dat er op het werk regels zijn om veilig te kunnen werken waar werknemers zich aan moeten houden en die worden gecontroleerd. Thuis is dat niet zo.
Het RIVM gaat met de NVWA verder onderzoeken hoe het precies zit met de oorzaken van ongelukken die thuis gebeuren.
Abstract
Many people perform DIY tasks at home and use products such as a ladder or a circular saw for this purpose. Sometimes, things can go wrong and cause an accident. Hospital data encompass details on the victims, such as their age and sex. It is often the case that the victims are older males, for instance. The data also show the consequences of the accidents, such as the type of injury. But the causes of accidents in and around the home are still unclear.
The National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM) and the Netherlands Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority (NVWA) are keen to know more about these causes. Improved advice could prevent accidents in the home. One important question is whether the accident is caused by the product or human error. The product might be old, for example. Or the user may have underestimated the risks or have been using the product in a hurry.
More is known about accidents in the workplace. Hence, RIVM started by comparing causes of serious accidents at work with information about accidents in and around the home. There proved to be both differences and similarities between accidents in and around the home and accidents in the workplace.
For instance, one similarity is that DIYers in the home and workers sustain the same types of injury. It is also common for the events immediately preceding the accidents to be similar. For example, victims of ladder accidents reach too far from the ladder, thereby losing their balance. One difference is that in the workplace there are rules to which employees are required to adhere and which are monitored. This is not the case in DIY tasks at home.
Together with the NVWA, RIVM will continue to investigate the exact causes of accidents in the home.
