Abstract

EU standards have been set to regulate levels of particulate matter in ambient air. Particulate matter, defined as particles with an aerodynamic diameter of less than 10 mu m, can cause health problems. Since it is necessary to know how much particulate matter is emitted by the various sources, accurate estimation methods are needed. Uncertainties about the methods prompted the Ministry of Environment to assign Alterra and RIVM the task of improving the inventory of particulate matter emissions originating from agricultural activities. The literature review and ensuing consultation among experts led to the conclusion that animal housing systems were probably the main source of particulate matter emissions. Minor contributions came from application of pesticides and fertilizers, and the delivery of feed concentrates on the farm. Wind-driven erosion from uncultivated arable land is probably also a large emission source, but this type of emission varies within the year and from year to year. Estimating the amount of emission per year is, however, difficult.
