Abstract

What measures do people in the Netherlands take to reduce the risk of diseases transmitted by animals? And what predicts whether they take these measures?

Survey research by RIVM shows that people are less likely to follow advice to wash their hands after walking or touching pets than they are to follow hygiene advice related to other animals or animal products. Most participants are aware that humans can get sick through direct contact with animals or animal products or by swimming in natural water, but routes of infection without direct contact are less well known.

Targeted education and communication can increase knowledge about diseases transmitted by animals and improve adherence to hygiene advice. Attention should particularly focus on behaviour around pets and swimming in natural water. Better knowledge and hygiene contribute to improved pandemic preparedness.
