Anxiety and depression issues among young people were already on the rise, but during the COVID-19 pandemic this trend accelerated. The number of young people in the Netherlands at a high risk of anxiety or depressive disorder rose sharply between 2020 and 2022. This has emerged from a study of Dutch and international research into trends in young people’s mental health, conducted by the Netherlands Institute for Health Services Research (Nivel) and RIVM.

The study consisted of a review of the scientific literature combined with an analysis of existing Dutch data from the Health Monitor for Adults and the Elderly. The results of the study have been incorporated into a scientific article and a fact sheet for Dutch policymakers.
