Abstract

NRG Pallas in Petten measures how much radioactivity it discharges into the environment via the wastewater system and the exhaust air. To that end, NRG Pallas takes samples at various times throughout the year. RIVM verifies these measurements eight times a year. The Authority for Nuclear Safety and Radiation Protection (ANVS) uses these counterchecks to assess the reliability of NRG Pallas's own analyses.

As in previous years, the gamma-ray spectrometry measurements for wastewater in 2025 demonstrated good consistency.

Data consistency with regard to gross alpha in the wastewater was good. Data consistency with regard to gross beta in wastewater was low, which can be explained by differences between the analytical methods applied by NRG Pallas and RIVM. Consistency with regard to the 3H data was very good.

The results obtained by RIVM and NRG Pallas for the exhaust air samples showed good consistency. RIVM detected low gamma activity for iodine-131, xenon-133, osmium-191 and mercury-203 in several samples. As the majority of these values were below NRG Pallas's detection limits, NRG Pallas did not report them.

RIVM detected very low gross alpha activity concentrations in the exhaust air samples, where NRG Pallas found none. The measurement results for both gross alpha and gross beta correspond to normal background radiation in Bilthoven, the Netherlands, and are likely due to naturally occurring radiation.

The ANVS commissions RIVM to carry out these counterchecks every year.
