Abstract

The nuclear power plant in Borssele (KCB) measures how much radioactivity the plant discharges via the nuclear wastewater system and the nuclear ventilation system. Eight times a year RIVM receives samples of wastewater and exhaust air and determines the radioactivity levels. RIVM compares these measurements with data from KCB.

The Authority for Nuclear Safety and Radiation Protection (ANVS) uses these counterchecks to assess whether the analyses carried out by the nuclear power plant itself are reliable.

KCB takes the samples to be analysed at intervals throughout the year.

The gamma analyses of wastewater from the counterchecks in 2025 are consistent with the results of the nuclear power plant.

The tritium data in wastewater showed good consistency across all eight samples. Neither the nuclear power plant nor RIVM found any strontium isotopes or alpha activity exceeding the detection limit in wastewater.

In three out of eight weekly ventilation air samples, RIVM and KCB both detected gamma activity from the nuclide 131I at 0.07 becquerel per cubic metre (Bq.m-3 ) or less. The results demonstrated a high level of consistency. Apart from very low levels of 133Xe, neither laboratory detected any other nuclides.

Each quarter, KCB takes a subsample of discharged exhaust air for analysis of inorganic and organic tritium and carbon-14. The results of the measurements of tritium and carbon-14 in exhaust air were reasonably consistent in the first and third quarters of 2025.

The ANVS commissions RIVM to carry out these counterchecks every year.
