Abstract

There are a number of medical microbiology reference laboratories within and outside the National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM) that protect the health of people in the Netherlands by detecting pathogens. They also compile a list of the pathogens that they find. Each reference laboratory specializes in a type (or group) of pathogen(s).

The laboratories are essential in order to detect pathogens at an early stage. This allows measures to be taken as quickly as possible when required and is the best way to prevent infections from spreading to many people.

Since 2023, the reference laboratories form a network, which encourages the laboratories to work together and exchange knowledge. The annual report of this Reference Laboratory Network describes the tasks of and the results achieved by the medical microbiology reference laboratories in the Netherlands.

Every four years, the tasks of the reference laboratories are evaluated by experts within and outside the RIVM. The first evaluation will take place in 2026. This will look at whether the reference laboratories are still able to respond adequately to new developments in the field of pathogens and where additional focus is needed.
