Abstract
This literature screening explores possible explanations for the difference between the in vitro and in vivo sun protection factor (SPF) measurements for sunscreens with zinc oxide as UV filter. The results show that although zinc oxide has anti-inflammatory properties, the absorption through intact skin is limited. Therefore, these properties of zinc oxide are unlikely to fully explain the observed differences in SPF measurements. Further research is needed to clarify the causes of these discrepancies.
