Abstract

In an exploratory study, RIVM investigated the extent to which wood burning can contribute to the total particulate matter concentration (PM2.5) in the air at peak times. This research was commissioned by the Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management (I&W).
Based on nuisance reports submitted via the “Stookwijzer” ('stoking guide'), RIVM derived a pattern for emissions of fine particles from wood stoves throughout the year. Dispersion calculations show that, at peak moments (evening hours in winter), the contribution of wood burning can rise to 30 percent of the total PM2.5 concentration.
