Samenvatting
Veel afval dat natuurlijke radioactieve stoffen bevat (NORM-afval) wordt gestort op deponieën. In Nederland wordt informatie over dit afval nog niet op nationaal niveau verzameld, waardoor monitoring ervan lastig is. Het RIVM heeft daarom een pilot uitgevoerd als eerste stap richting een mogelijk landelijk meldpunt NORM-afval op deponieën. Voor het peiljaar 2024 is hierbij een afvalinventarisatie uitgevoerd met behulp van een gestandaardiseerde spreadsheet. Daaruit werd duidelijk dat in 2024 in Nederland 70 kiloton NORM-afval is gestort, verspreid over drie deponieën. Het NORM-afval bevatte voornamelijk de relatief kortlevende radionucliden Pb-210 en Po-210 (polonium). Wel bleek dat de spreadsheet nog kan worden verbeterd.
Abstract
A large amount of waste containing naturally occurring radioactive materials (NORM waste) is disposed of in landfills. In the Netherlands, information about this waste is not yet collected at a national level, making it difficult to monitor. For this reason, the RIVM has carried out a pilot project as a first step towards establishing a potential national reporting point for NORM waste at landfills. For the reference year 2024, a waste inventory was conducted using a standardized spreadsheet. This showed that in 2024, 70 kilotons of NORM waste were disposed of in the Netherlands, distributed across three landfills. The NORM waste mainly contained the relatively short-lived radionuclides Pb-210 and Po-210. However, it also became clear that the spreadsheet can still be improved.
