The number of people with tuberculosis in the Netherlands increased last year to the highest number in nine years. This is shown by the RIVM's key figures for tuberculosis, which are published every year on World Tuberculosis Day.

Access to urban green spaces is good for health. This has been shown in various scientific research studies. RIVM investigated whether green neighbourhoods’ impact on health could also be expressed numerically.

In April 2025, RIVM concluded that home-produced eggs across the Netherlands may contain much more PFAS than commercial eggs. New RIVM research confirms that this is mainly due to worms that chickens pick up from the soil.

The legally binding targets for reducing nitrogen deposition in Natura 2000 areas will not be met, according to the second monitoring and evaluation of the Nitrogen Reduction and Nature Improvement Programme (PSN). Despite the measures that the government has implemented, deposition of nitrogen on most nitrogen sensitive nature areas continue to exceed safe levels. Nature restoration in the Netherlands is lagging behind thresholds agreed within the European Union.

Digital care usage among care providers and care users in 2025 remained largely unchanged compared to 2024. Some applications saw more frequent use, with more GPs and hospital doctors, for example, using video calls and AI-powered voice-to-text for tasks such as dictating clinical notes

The Netherlands is establishing a new knowledge centre to help companies develop safe and sustainable chemical substances and products. The centre is a collaboration between RIVM, TNO, IenW and the VNCI. Its aim is to take health, the environment and sustainability into account from the earliest stage of designing substances and products. In this way, the centre aims to prevent society from facing new problem substances in the future, such as PFAS.

Over the past few months, about three-quarters of infants in the Netherlands have had an injection against the respiratory syncytial virus (RSV). As a result, there have been significantly fewer babies admitted to children’s intensive care units (ICU). In the 2024-2025 season, a total of 178 infants had been admitted to ICU due to RSV infections by the start of February. In this season, there have been 43 infant ICU admissions for RSV so far. Since September 2025, an injection against RSV has been included in the National Immunisation Programme.

Many new houses need to be built in the coming years, while space is scarce. As a result, there are plans to build houses in areas exposed to high levels of noise from multiple sources, such as around Schiphol Airport. Long-term exposure to high noise levels can lead to sleep disturbance, annoyance, and other adverse health effects.

The rise of electric cycling has health benefits for people and the environment. Such benefits occur, for example, when the electric bicycle replaces short trips by car. There are also disadvantages though, especially for young people. Electric bicycles may cause them to become less physically active.

In the first nine months of 2025, the Dutch Reporting Centre for Adverse Effects of Medical Implants (MEBI) received 30 reports of problems with the removal of the Ballerine copper IUD (IUB™ Ballerine® MIDI) in 26 women.
