Starting in September 2025, babies can get an injection against RSV. The respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) can cause serious respiratory infections, especially in young babies. Between 1,500 and 3,000 babies end up in hospital every year as a result of RSV. The injection protects babies against severe illness resulting from the virus during their first year of life.

From Friday 15 August 2025 at the end of the day the National Heatwave Plan will no longer be active in the whole country. The heatwave plan was already no longer active in the northern provinces from Thursday 14 August.

On Tuesday, August 14, the air quality in parts of the provinces Utrecht, North Brabant, Gelderland, and Limburg, will be poor due to smog from ozone. This may cause discomfort for people who are sensitive to smog. RIVM advises them to stay indoors and limit strenuous physical activity. This advice is most relevant in the late afternoon and early evening, when the air will be most polluted.

From Thursday 14 August 2025 at 18:00 pm the National Heatwave Plan will no longer be active in the provinces Noord-Holland, Flevoland, Friesland, Groningen and Drenthe. The heatwave plan will remain active in the other provinces. The Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute (KNMI) and RIVM will continue to monitor the situation.

On Tuesday, August 12, and Wednesday, August 13, the air quality in different parts of the Netherlands will be poor due to smog from ozone. On Tuesday, August 12, the air quality in the province of North-Brabant and central parts of the Netherlands possibly will be poor. On Wednesday, August 13, the air quality will be poor in de northern provinces of the Netherlands.

After consulting the Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute (KNMI), RIVM has decided to activate the National Heatwave Plan throughout the Netherlands as of 12 August 2025 at 10:00 am. The reason for activating this plan is to let informal carers and care professionals know that a heatwave is coming.

Fewer people were tested for sexually transmitted infections (STIs) at a Sexual Health Centre (SHC) in 2024 than in 2023. People who have a higher risk of STIs can get tested for free at the SHCs.

Everyone in the Netherlands has various types of PFAS in their blood. In almost all cases, the amount of PFAS exceeds the health-based guidance value. This is shown by research conducted by RIVM using blood samples from 2016 and 2017.

The new COVID-19 vaccination round will start on 15 September 2025. The COVID-19 vaccination is intended for people who are at higher risk, with the aim of continuing to offer more effective protection against hospital admission or death resulting from COVID-19. The COVID-19 vaccination will be available until 5 December 2025.

Leiden University has appointed Mirjam Luijten, toxicologist at RIVM, as professor by special appointment at the Leiden Academic Centre for Drug Research (LACDR) with effect from 1 July 2025.
