WHO Reference Laboratory for Coronaviruses

The World Health Organization has designated RIVM as a reference laboratory for coronaviruses. As such, RIVM participates in the SARS-CoV-2 reference laboratory network known as CoViNet.

Current figures on measles in the Netherlands

This page presents the latest figures on measles in the Netherlands. Doctors and laboratory managers notify the Municipal Public Health Services (GGDs) if patients have measles. The GGDs notify RIVM of these reported cases.  A larger outbreak occurs in the Netherlands about once every 10–15 years. The most recent major outbreak of measles in the Netherlands was in 2013–2014.

Quarterly study among adults – round 10

The number of adults who visited their GP for memory and concentration problems was 15% higher in the fourth quarter of 2023 compared to before the pandemic (2019). In addition, over 3% of adults (26+) continue to have persistent symptoms after COVID-19. This is evidenced by the latest quarterly update from December 2023. The study is part of Health Research for COVID-19. In this study, the GOR Network researches the health effects of the COVID-19 crisis. The Network for Health Research in Disasters (GOR Network) publishes a quarterly update on this page, summarising key results from survey research and data from primary care providers. The aim is to provide information to municipalities, provinces and the national government of the Netherlands to assist them in formulating policies. 

Quarterly youth study – round 10

Among young people aged 12–25 years, 5% have persistent long-term symptoms after COVID-19. This is evidenced by the latest quarterly update from December 2023. The results of the quarterly study are part of the Health Research for COVID-19 research programme. 

Current figures on whooping cough in the Netherlands

Whooping cough is seen regularly in the Netherlands among people of all ages. There is a peak in reported cases of whooping cough about every 2 to 4 years. Doctors and laboratory managers notify the Municipal Public Health Services (GGDs) if patients have whooping cough. The GGDs notify RIVM of these reported cases. Dutch National Growth Fund invests €124.5 million in transition to animal-free innovation

The Dutch National Growth Fund will invest 124.5 million euros in a new Centre for Animal-Free Biomedical Translation (CPBT) to accelerate the transition to animal-free research over the next decade. The aim of the centre is to generate safer, more effective treatments, while reducing animal suffering. RIVM, in collaboration with Utrecht University, UMC Utrecht and Utrecht University of Applied Sciences, is one of the initiators of the centre and involved in strengthening the acceptance and use of animal-free biomedical innovations.
