There is a realistic chance that the Netherlands will once again face large-scale infectious disease outbreaks in the coming years. The COVID-19 pandemic highlighted the need for better preparedness. Rapid upscaling and central coordination of medical-operational processes, such as testing, vaccination and source and contact tracing, are essential during such an outbreak. This crisis response organisation is part of the domain for Prevention Programmes and Public Health Upscaling. 

Every activity with hazardous substances involves risks. Calculation methods have been prescribed to better visualise the risks of these activities for the environment. RIVM develops and manages these calculation methods in collaboration with various parties. Each calculation method consists of a calculation model in the form of a software program and a manual that describes how the risks should be calculated. The aim is to ensure that the calculation methods are in line with the latest scientific insights. The knowledge is obtained through literature, participation in national and international knowledge meetings and through the national and international network of RIVM.
