Illness after a tick bite

Ticks can carry various pathogens and transmit them to humans. The most common tick-borne disease in the Netherlands is Lyme disease. Other tick-borne pathogens found in this country include the tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) virus and various bacteria.

Reporting a tick bite

Did you or your child get bitten by a tick? Do you have a red ring (erythema migrans) or round rash around the site? Or have you developed a fever after a tick bite? Please report it on www.tekenradar.nl. Via this website, you can contribute to national research on tick bites and Lyme disease.

How to remove a tick

Always remove ticks quickly! The longer the tick is attached to your skin, the higher the risk that it will transmit diseases. 

How to check for ticks

Have you visited a place where ticks are likely to be found? Check yourself and others for ticks.

How to prevent tick bites

Ticks are mostly found in high, shaded grass and decomposing leaves near trees and bushes. That is why it is important to check for tick bites after visiting such places.
