NEVO online

Added and removed foods

30 New foods are added and 25 foods removed since the publication of NEVO-online 2023. Reasons to add foods to NEVO are,  for instance:
• New foods put on the market
• Consumption of the food is considerable
• New food composition data available

Foods that are no longer available in the market are removed from NEVO online.

Previous versions NEVO online

Each version has new added NEVO-codes and deleted outdated codes. If you need previous versions of NEVO-online for your research, you can send a request to nevo@rivm.nl. Not all versions are still available and the format can be different. Using former tables needs attention to some aspects. The nutritional value of products can change over time. Values can be replaced by newer analyses; this can result in some differences in nutritional value although the product itself did not change.

The Importance of Food Composition Databases

The need for high-quality, up-to-date, and publicly accessible databases, such as NEVO, that provide information about the composition of generic and branded food products is increasing. This is highlighted by researchers from RIVM and the Netherlands Nutrition Centre in this scientific article (Journal of Food Composition and Analysis). Such databases are essential for shaping nutrition policy and informing consumers about healthy diets. It is important to maintain the quality and completeness of these databases, but this also requires greater (financial) effort. This is further demonstrated in this scientific article about LEDA (Journal of Food Composition and Analysis). During a workshop in 2025, seven countries, including the Netherlands, shared their experiences, challenges, and solutions for further improving the quality of food composition databases. Information about branded products and new technologies, such as artificial intelligence, can contribute to this effort. These topics are discussed in this report (external link) (Journal of Food Composition and Analysis).
