RIVM conducts research into behavioural and perception issues related to the environment and safety. Based on scientific insights, we provide advice on perception and behaviour to the government (central government, provinces and municipalities), professionals and citizens. We also share our knowledge and, in doing so, contribute to a safe and sustainable society. If you would like to know more about the possibilities for research, please send an email to onderzoekperceptieengedrag@rivm.nl.
Our research reports are accessible to everyone. You are free to use the scientific insights contained therein, for example as input for policy and to improve communications on safety and sustainable behaviour.

Our 4 research areas
Risk communication
Effective risk communication takes the ideas, questions and concerns of the target group into account.
Behavioural research
Why do people act in a safe or sustainable way, or why do they fail to do so? Which interventions are effective in creating behavioural change?
Perception research
The fact that calculations have shown something to be risky does not mean people will also perceive it as risky.
Citizen participation
Actively involving citizens in scientific research on safety and the environment.
