Weekly update on COVID-19 vaccination: 21 March to 4 April 2021
By Sunday 4 April, it is estimated that more than 2.8 million vaccinations had been administered in the Netherlands. In week 13, the Netherlands received 326,430 doses of the Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine, 145,200 doses of the Moderna vaccine and 430,320 doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine.
The update for week 13, like previous weekly updates, provides estimates of the total number of vaccinations administered based on the number of vaccines delivered. However, it is no longer possible for all vaccinators to distinguish between the total number of first and second doses. This is because the same target groups can now receive both their first vaccination and second vaccination. It is also no longer possible to calculate vaccination coverage for elderly people living at home, since vaccinations for this group are now being provided not only by the Municipal Public Health Services (GGDs), but also by GP practices. RIVMNational Institute for Public Health and the Environment is currently only receiving complete information on the number of vaccinations administered to people who were vaccinated by the GGD.
A daily estimate of the number of vaccinations that have been administered is available on the Coronavirus Dashboard provided by the Dutch national government.

- COM= Comirnaty® (Pfizer/BioNTech); MOD= COVID-19 Vaccine Moderna®; AZ= Vaxzevria® (AstraZeneca); for all the vaccines currently available, 2 doses are recommended.
- In some cases, people aged 70 years and over living at home were already vaccinated before the official start date listed here. Reasons include the following: for practical reasons, people are sometimes invited a bit earlier than the exact moment that they reach the relevant age; on the Wadden Islands, different age limits were used and vaccination already started from 16 February 2021 on for people aged 75-79 years (and 60-79 years for Vlieland and Schiermonnikoog); some care workers continued to work after reaching retirement age; some people who live in an institution may have been vaccinated by the Municipal Health Service (GGD); and people born in 1947 and 1948 were able to make an appointment slightly sooner than when they received an invitation.
- A continuous data flow into the national registration system (CIMS) is not yet available for the number of people vaccinated by other vaccinating organisations (hospitals and institutions) and by GPs. Therefore, the number of doses issued to vaccination sites as ordered by RIVMNational Institute for Public Health and the Environment is temporarily used as an estimate for these vaccinators. For Comirnaty® (Pfizer/BioNTech), it is assumed that these doses are administered on the day that they are provided and during the following three days in equal segments (25% per day). It is assumed that deliveries of deep-frozen Comirnaty® are used within ten working days. It is assumed that COVID-19 Vaccine Moderna® is administered in the course of nine working days, and that Vaxzevria® (AstraZeneca) is administered in the course of ten working days (in the case of GPs: ten working days excluding the day of delivery). For deliveries of Vaxzevria® (AstraZeneca) or COVID-19 Vaccine Moderna® to institutions or hospitals, it is assumed that the vaccines are administered over the course of ten working days. RIVM takes 5% wastage into account and assumes 6 doses per vaccine vial for Comirnaty® (Pfizer/BioNTech), 10 doses per vaccine vial for COVID-19 Vaccine Moderna® and 11 doses per vaccine vial for Vaxzevria® (AstraZeneca).
- From week 13 onwards, no distinction can currently be made between first and second doses for vaccinations carried out by other vaccinators, and the first and second doses are allocated pro rata based on the distribution up to and including week 12 for other vaccinators (i.e. 64% first dose, 36% second dose). That distinction can be made again once the national registration system (CIMS) can be used to generate reports.
