More people in the Netherlands are infected with the respiratory syncytial virus (RSV). This virus is mainly seen in winter. Most adults with RSV only have a nasal cold. However, babies under 12 months can become very ill.

The percentage of people in the Netherlands with overweight will increase to 64% in 2050, up from 50% in 2022. The percentage will increase for every age group, but the 18–44 age group will see the most significant increase.

In many places, the groundwater and surface water still contains too much nitrogen and phosphorus. As a result, the Netherlands is failing to meet the targets of the European Nitrates Directive.

The number of people with a chronic illness is set to rise further by 2050, to nearly 12 million. Dementia and arthrosis are expected to see particularly significant increases, with the number of people affected by these conditions expected to nearly double by 2050.

From 20 November on, data from National Immunisation Programme will be available through the client portal provided by the National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM): Mijn.RIVM.nl . The data can also be accessed through five personal digital health environments qualified for this purpose.

The number of appointments at the Sexual Health Centres in the Netherlands that were related to sexually transmitted infections (STIs) dropped by 8% in the first half of 2024, compared to the same period in the previous year. The decrease was most significant among women and heterosexual men.

Adequate preparations by the government and by citizens can help mitigate the consequences of a future pandemic or other disaster. However, a study by the National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM) has shown that people in the Netherlands are not making these preparations (pandemic preparedness).
